In the Human Design system, there are many components to or aspects of our “bodygraph” (see image below). The top two numbers on each side of your body graph (conscious sun and earth and unconscious sun and earth) have a decimal number after them. These numbers comprise your human design “profile” and they offer information on the “character” or archetype you are meant to embody in this lifetime.
According to human design expert Karen Curry Parker, our profiles tell us our “learning style, our life path and how to live out our life purpose, what role relationships will play in our lives, and what we need to feel grounded and stable”. (1) That’s quite a bit of information, so let’s break it down using my own bodygraph as an example!

So as you can see, there are two rows of numbers (representing the defined gates in our chart), a black row (energy we are consciously aware of) and a red row (energy that we are not as consciously aware of, but how we tend to show up in the world or how others would describe us). The top two black numbers have a 5 behind them and they comprise the first number in my profile. The top two red numbers have a 2 behind them and comprise the second number in my profile. So together I have a “5/2” profile. (This information is also listed when you download your free chart)
The first number in our profile (the top two decimals in black) comprises our soul purpose...
how we see ourselves or who we’ve always been, and how we experience our inner world (lessons learned through the mind).
The second number in our profile (the top two decimals in red) comprises our life purpose...
the aspect we are less consciously aware of, but it's how the world sees us and the aspect of ourselves we’ve come to learn to be in this lifetime (lessons tend to be learned and experienced through the body).
Our profiles will be made up of two numbers 1-6, creating 12 possible profiles...
The reason we have two rows of numbers in our chart is because human design proposes that we are influenced by the neutrino (tiny particles that are the byproduct of stars and that have mass but pass through all matter and influence its makeup, including our cells!) imprint of where the planets were at the moment of our birth (which is why it’s so important to have an accurate birth time when running your chart!) and where the planets were 3 months prior to our birth (as many mystic traditions believe this is when the soul implants in the body).
According to Karen Parker, our first number or “soul” number usually has to be fulfilled first, before our second number or “life” number can come into full play in our lives. Let’s take a look at the possible lines and what archetypal energy they can represent for us:
Line 1: the “investigator” or “teacher”. As a 1, this line is all about building a strong foundation. Those with a first line as their first number have always felt best when they are armed with all the facts and are able to follow their own process to get to the bottom of things. Allow yourself to read, research, ponder, and search to your heart’s content! Your soul’s purpose unfolds most vibrantly through your own personal learnings or inner experience of life.
Line 2: the “hermit” or “guru”. Line two tends to learn in the opposite way of the 1; whereas it is correct for the line 1 to dive deep into research and facts and to arm themselves with all the data before making a decision, line 2’s are meant to follow their own natural inclinations. They are meant to get fully absorbed in their own process and allow the wisdom gathered from that to take the lead. When do you get most aggravated being interrupted? That’s what you need to be spending your time/energy on! Similar to line 1, line 2’s as a first line will learn their soul lessons through their own inner process rather than through their relationships with others.
Line 3: the “martyr” or “priest/ess”. Line three’s are all about learning through trial and error! It is best for 3’s as children to have the freedom to try many things, “fail”, learn from the process, and move on. Especially through the first 30 years of life, these individuals need to really experiment with life and gather lots of nuggets that in time will become cohesive wisdom that you will share with others. Similar to lines 1-2, line 3’s learn their primary soul lessons through their own inner process.
Line 4: the “opportunist” or “prophet”. Here we make the transition from personal soul learnings to transpersonal soul learnings, or learning through our relationships with others (except for “4/1” profiles, which are called a “juxtaposition” and has the focus of being a stabilizing force for others)! Line 4’s are all about networking or connecting with their respective communities. They find their greatest opportunities for growth through the people they are connected to. Your personal relationships are a very important part of who you are and that is perfectly aligned for you!
Line 5: the “heretic” or “messenger”. Similar to 4th line profiles, you are meant to serve the community, but on a broader, more impersonal level. You carry a natural energy of wanting to jump in and help solve problems or relieve the suffering of others. People feel this in you and may project onto you the ability to solve any problem. Your most important learning is getting very clear on your gifts and how you are meant to serve and then only jumping in when those aspects are called upon. You can’t save everyone from everything (I know, I know, as a fellow 5 this is tough, but it truly allows our gifts to SHINE!). Similar to 4’s, your soul purpose shines most vibrantly when you are serving others and here is where your greatest self learning takes place.
Line 6: the “role model” or “buddha”. Line 6’s your soul lessons look a lot like that of 3’s for the first 30 years of life (or until your saturn return). You spend these earlier years immersed in many (and perhaps seemingly disparate) experiences, collecting nuggets of wisdom. In the second part of life, you will forge all of these experiences into a cohesive wisdom and as you move into your elder years, you will then share that wisdom with others! Similar to 4th and 5th lines, 6 line profiles have “transpersonal” karma and so their soul gifts shine most vibrantly and their greatest wisdom is garnered through their interactions with others.
What about the second number?
Second line numbers have a similar overall pattern to that of first line numbers, but again, we tend to be less consciously aware of them. They are the aspects of ourselves that we came to learn to embody in this lifetime. Although WE are less aware of it, this tends to be the aspect that shines outward most brightly, so it may be how your close circle describes you. For example if you are a 2/4, you may be more naturally in tune with your inner process and how your gifts express themselves in the world (although it is common for all 2 lines to be somewhat unsure of their gifts). It is natural for you to spend lots of time alone, immersed in your inner process. For a 5/2, though, they may see themselves as always wanting to jump in and help others solve problems and a desire to save the day. They may be less aware of their unique gifts and natural talents, although their friends and family can see them clearly.
How can I learn more?
Keep in mind that this is simply ONE of many aspects of your chart and how it will ultimately express depends on many additional factors. This is simply a springboard that can serve further diving into your chart!
If you’d like to explore your chart in full, I’d love to schedule a 1:1 session together, where we will cover each aspect of your chart in DEPTH and how each of the pieces fits together for your Highest unfolding. YOU CAN SCHEDULE YOUR SESSION HERE
If you’d prefer a less personal experience, but still reap the benefits of having all of your information in one place, I also offer “Life Alignment Notes”; a full chart write up without the 1:1 session together.
